Incel (a portmanteau of “involuntary celibate”) is a term associated with an online subculture of people (mostly white, male and heterosexual) who define themselves as unable to find a romantic or sexual partner despite desiring one, and blame, objectify and denigrate women and girls as a result.

Article II of the Genocide Convention contains a definition of the crime of genocide, which includes two elements:
A mental element:
the “intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such”;
and
A physical element, which includes the following five acts, enumerated exhaustively:
– Killing members of the group
– Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group
– Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part
– Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group
– Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group

This work is based on my own attempt to understand and visually express what is happening in the world today.
The exhibition finishes with a reference to Lee Miller, a photographer and artist that stimulated this work.
You’ll never wash it away Lee Miller (2024) was intended to try to convey the images and experiences that she must have seen and had to live with.
We are daily bombarded with horrific images through various media. Unchecked information, biased news, fake platforms expressing uncensored opinions. Amplification of intolerance and hatred.
We haven’t learned from the atrocities of war.
Miller exposed the horrors of World War 2 but since then we have seen it happen again and again.
Iraq, Bosnia, Rwanda, Kosovo, Darfur, Syria, Ukraine, Israel, Gaza…
It goes on and on.
Maybe if it isn’t here it doesn’t affect us. But it does. It isn’t distant. Its everywhere.
The rise of the right wing, the intolerance of diversity and divergence. Hate speech. Bullying. Trolling.
Nationalism.
Caused by the protagonists, but the solution may be with the rest of us.
Residing in denial. Our indifference.
In the comfort of ignorance.
